800 Meter Run
The defining performance of the 2004 State Meet came in this event. Sissonville's Jennifer Povick had her sights set on breaking the long-standing record of Musselman's Debbie Dukes. If you didn't know that coming in, you certainly knew it after she turned the first lap in just under 62 seconds. Povick had already easily outdistanced the field, and all she had to do was keep from breaking down coming down the homestretch. She held up, and held up well, shattering the existing mark by over 2 seconds in running a 2:13.58. That will set the mark as the All-Time All-Class Top Performance in State Meet History. The race for 2nd wasn't much of a race either. Weir's Carly Gregson made an early move to go with Povick, and while she couldn't hold that, she easily held off the remainder of the field. Logan's Darby Mullen led a close pack to the finish to take 3rd. That pack saw five girls finish in less than 1.5 seconds. Winfield's Kasey Jividen was the second of the group taking 4th. Spots 5, 6, and 7 were decided by a mere 0.24, with Grafton's Erika Rucker holding on to 5th and Berkeley Springs' Valerie Peer slipping in just ahead of teammate Emily McCoy for 6th.

Oak Glen was solidly in 2nd place, well back of Magnolia, but even further ahead of the rest of the field. Frankfort slipped in ahead of Weir by just over a tenth of a second for 3rd. Winfield ran fast enough in the first heat to edge Bridgeport for 5th.
RunWV's Current Score: 90 of 108.

The final score of 90 of 108 means that 83.3 % of the people picked to place did indeed place. Congratulations to those that proved us wrong.

He opened a gap of roughly 5 meters heading into the homestretch, but Benford had one last push and squeezed past Bossert with around 20 meters to go. The pair ended up 15 seconds ahead of the field, with each going through the last lap in 63 seconds. Poca's Matt Null joined them in going under 10:00 with his 9:57. RunWV's Current Score: 43 of 48.

1600 Meter Run
In another of our more anticipated battles of the meet, the 1600 pitted Roane's Justin Bossert against Ravenswood's Andrew Benford just as in the 3200 on Friday night. There was still a large pack after two laps, but on lap 3, the two separated themselves from the field. Bossert made his move early and generated a gap between himself and Benford. However, unlike in the 3200, this time Benford could not close that gap, and Bossert recorded the victory by 1.6 seconds. Liberty Harrison's Josh Wagner again used a strong last lap to take 3rd. Ritchie's Clifton Umstead ran a season best by over 6 seconds to move up into 4th. Scott's Jason Sheets was close behind in 5th. Sissonville's Wes Snodgrass was less than a second behind in 6th.

RunWV's Current Score: 73 of 84.

800 Meter Run
This was another of our highly anticipated races. Roane's Justin Bossert would once again be doing battle with a Benford. This time it would be both Adam Benford and Andrew Benford against whom Bossert would have to compete. The opening lap pace was not blistering, setting up a kick to the finish. Again Bossert made the first move, opening a gap of several meters as they headed into the home stretch. However, the sub-50 400 speed of Adam Benford provided a gear that Bossert couldn't match, and Benford slid past Bossert just before the finish line. Ravenswood's Andrew Benford also clocked in at under 2:00 to take 3rd. Finishing just over 2:00 was Winfield's Ricardo Atkinson in taking 4th. Shady Spring's Chris Rose was just over a second back in 5th, with Scott's Jason Sheets just under a second behind him in 6th.
RunWV's Current Score: 78 of 90.

Winfield used a strong anchor leg from Ricardo Atkinson to hang close and score a tie for 10th Best Class AA State Meet Performance Ever. Oak Glen ran a very solid 3rd, just missing getting in under 3:30. Shady Spring dominated the 1st heat to take 4th. Frankfort pulled out a 5th place finish, and Ritchie finalized the scoring for the event.
RunWV's Current Score: 88 of 102.

Pole Vault
Due to the delay of the night before, the AA Boys Pole Vault got a late start and we ended with the strange circumstance of the 4x400 not being the final event completed. Three competitors cleared 13'0 on this day, with Ritchie's Michael Manning winning the event on misses. Bridgeport's duo of Raymond Powers and David Haws took 2nd and 3rd respectively. Roane's Jason Alvis was the only other vaulter to clear 12'6. Ravenswood's Travis Matics was the only other vaulter over 12'0. Winfield's Seth Beckner was the only other vaulter over 11'6 and rounded out the scoring for the meet.
